Farewell in Flag

Eric has to do a four month pediatric rotation in Salt Lake City, so we took him as far as Flagstaff to bid him farewell. The kids had no school on Friday, so we headed up early so Stacie and I could hit the slopes. Eric was supposed to be able to come early, too, but it didn't work out. Work stinks sometimes!

I have only been skiing once in my life and it was ten years ago. Stacie said I had nothing to fear, for I was with her. We got all of our gear and headed out. She showed me a little girl that had her toes close and her heels spread far. "See that? That's called a 'pizza.' Just do that and we'll talk more on the lift at the bunny slope." No problem. Really??? "Stacie, I can't even get goi...WHOOSH!!! HELP!!! I'm pizzaing, I swear! I'm pizzaing!" Finally, I came to a stop, only to be greeted by a hysterical sister with tears running down her face - not from fear. From laughing. Alright, let's try this again. A little more pressure on the inside of my feet. I'm feeling confident. Nope. Thank goodness for big giant poles! However, it was at this point that I informed Stacie that she was the WORST ski instructor ever!

After we made it to the lift and had a little photo shoot, I asked her if there was anything else I needed to know - like how to get off. "Just scoot to the edge, bend your knees a little and turn." Awesome. I'm sure I can handle that like a pro after almost dying trying to get to the bunny hill. Thank goodness for strapping young employees to scoop me up and out of the way. We were off to an awesome start. (Note the awesome rainbow sunglasses. Stacie forgot to tell me I'd need some, so we borrowed the only available pair from lost and found. I felt like a million bucks!)

Luckily, with Stacie's fine instruction (I have to apologize for the above said comment) and my stunning natural ability, the rest of the day was actually a lot of fun. I'd go from feelings of fear, to exhiliration, to fear, to exhiliration - several times down the hill and it was worth it every time. My balance was pretty good, but I never did master the pizza. I'd shoot down the hill with no real plan of how to control my speed. I kept trying to watch Stacie's new skills she'd been working on, but I usually ended up yelling out an apology as I flew by. My turns eventually got a little better, and as long as there was plenty of space and no little kids I did okay. I did come in a little fast to the chair lift line one time (we had moved up to the beginner's hill by now) and plowed into a snow boarder. Thankfully, she had a good sense of humor and popped right up, dragging me up with her.

The weather was perfect and the views were amazing. Especially as the sun was setting over the mountains. I think we were definitely the cutest snow bunnies there!

Me in all my glory (I knew I was a goner the second I felt my ski catch on some snow. It was a wipeout worthy of a replay - if only we had a video camera)....

....and Stacie in all of her glory.

After several good hours, we took our tired, achy bodies to Salsa Bravos to finish off our sister outing. It was a great afternoon/evening. Thanks for such a fabulous time, Stac!

Meanwhile, the kids had a wonderful time with their cousins, and of course their cousin's stuff! Did you know that that was a REAL army helmet? How awesome can you get? Chase also taught them how to make a baking soda bomb. Best cousin ever!

We were a little worried about how Ashlyn and Hallie would get along. They both have strong little personalities. They had SOOO much fun together. Phew!

We were also lucky enough to watch Taige and Brooklyn play basketball. Rarely do we get the chance, so I was really glad we were able to go and cheer them on.

The major highlight that the kids were looking forward to was sledding. Hallie wasn't feeling well that morning, so Ashlyn got to wear all of her snow duds. I think she looks pretty cute all bundled up.

I actually don't have any sledding pictures. Stacie must have them all on her camera. However, I was lucky enough to capture Eric's snowboarding attempts! "It's been awhile - the snow was bad - yada, yada..." Love you, honey!

Ashlyn wanted to make a snowman, but this was as far as we got! The snow was too icy and hard. I think it was pretty cute... :)

The event ended in a major snow fight. Mainly Kailan and I against Eric, with the other kids making our difficult job even harder.

My hair was a solid block of ice after Carter and Isaac packed the snow in over and over again.

Don't worry. I'm not the nice sort of mom. I totally got my nine and six year olds back!

We were supposed to say our farewells Sunday after church, but a snowstorm came in later than planned and we decided to give it another night instead of driving in it. I mostly think we were stalling. Monday morning, Stacie watched the kids so Eric and I could go to breakfast, then it was time to load the car and say goodbye. We're now two weeks down, with three and a half more months to go. It's no fun for either one of us, but Eric gets to come home for a week soon and I'll go visit him for a week in April. As soon as school is out, we'll all go up for the last month. I can't wait! I know it's a short time in the grand scheme of things, but I'm still anxious for it to be over. We are meant to be together! Darn that crazy thing called love....

Catch and Release

Ian got a helium balloon for Valentine's Day and thought it was hilarious to let it go and have me catch it. We'd been playing for awhile before I thought to grab the camera. He was starting to wind down, but when he fell over laughing, I knew I had to post it! Happy Valentine's Day!

Who else wants to cry with me?

I don't know why I keep trying. I just can't cut hair. When Eric's hair is buzzed, it's usually not because it's easier and more manageable (although that's my saving grace). It's most often because I say "Here, let me help. I'm sure I can do it this time." Shouldn't I have learned by now?

Ian's hair has been out of control for awhile now. Last night, while he was in the bath, I decided it would be the perfect opportunity to trim a wiggly one year old's hair with dull scissors. After chasing him around the tub, hacking away, I thought it turned out okay. Boy was I wrong! This morning told a whole new story. Without boring you with the various "whys" and "hows" that led to this (trust me, it was the only option left!), here is my bald, baby boy.

I know he's still adorable, but I sure miss his hair!

Until the next time "I'm sure I can do it"......

Poor baby!

Sunday, Ian had his most miserable day ever! We had no idea what his issues were, we just knew he had major ones. He cried that whole night and his demeanor didn't change when he woke up Monday morning. He had a bit of a fever, but it didn't seem to add up to how sad he was. When I put him in his highchair for breakfast, he kept trying to eat his food with his mouth. When he couldn't reach it, he finally decided to try with his hand. When he couldn't quite get it to his mouth and was shaking all over, I knew something was definitely wrong. I took him to the pediatrician, we got x-rays of his forearm and elbow, but nothing showed up. We still didn't know what the matter was (besides double ear infections - that explains the fever and part of the misery). She sent him home in a sling and told me to call the pediatric orthopedist in the morning if things didn't get better. Doesn't he play the ailing boy well?

By evening, I had decided it was something with his hand. When Eric got home, he figured out it was something with his wrist. He made a splint, which seemed to help, and the baby zonked. It had been a hard day!

I took him to the pediatric orthopedist this morning, and after another x-ray, he found a slight chip off of his radius bone. No idea how that happened! So he casted him up, and he's a whole new boy.
He's still having a hard time crawling, especially on the hard floors, because his cast slips, but I'm sure he'll get the hang of it soon. Or maybe he'll finally learn to walk.....

In all our glory!

What else is there to do on a Sunday evening?

Big Boy Birthday!

Our baby boy turned ONE! It was a busy week with Isaac's Birthday, Pinewood Derby, and then Ian's Birthday all in a row, but what a great way to finish it off! His actual birthday was Friday, but a flaming muffin was pretty much all we did in way of celebration.

Of course he loved it!

Who really needs to do more than that when you have a dog kennel?

It's really his favorite place to be. Maybe I should lock him in there a little more often! Sure made packing easier...
That evening we went to Thatcher with some friends, the Jones', to spend the weekend and we had a proper celebration on Saturday. We probably could have even done without that, because Grandma and Grandpa have a doggie door!

Grandpa recently built a fire pit, so we roasted hotdogs for dinner.

The smoke was a little much, but we perservered.

Ian felt that since he was now one, he should be the head hotdog server.

After dinner, we let Ian dive into his cupcake. I had tried to make him a cake, but it stuck to the pan and crumbled. I wasn't too heartbroken because none of my kids thus far have done anything more than cry at their cake.

It only took Ian a minute to get warmed up.

I'm sure he would have preferred a whole cake!

So much fun!

It was just as fun watching him open presents as it was watching him eat his cupcake. He would take all of the tissue paper out of the bag, peek inside, and then stuff it all back in.

He took his present-opening job very seriously.

I'm sure he loved it all!

My older boys and their friend Caleb were lucky enough to all show up in the same pajamas. They rock!

I think Ian had a fun birthday weekend, but even if not, I sure enjoyed it! Thanks, Jones' for sharing it with us. Ian has been pure joy in our family. We all adore him and he can do no wrong (or at least it's quickly forgotten!) We love you, Ian! Happy Birthday!

Pinewood Derby

It's pinewood derby time again! Isaac was so excited to get his car built and defend his title from last year. I did my best to prep him with a possible loss. It's a good thing I did! We were racing on a three lane track and the "Speedwave" came in second a couple of times and third all the rest. Fortunately he had a really great attitude and still had a fun time. His birthday was the day before, so he raced with the Bears.

Caleb, Isaac, Mack

Mack's car won first place for the Wolves. They were pretty excited.

He was awarded "Most Torpedo Like" car and everyone received a ceramic Napa race car.

First place or not, those are some pretty awesome cars!

What a fun night. I love cub scouts!
